How to write a clear job request

A better brief helps providers judge suitability and give quotes based on the same facts.

Start with the outcome

Describe what should be different when the job is finished. Add quantities, dimensions, product models or photographs only where they help a provider understand the work.

Disclose constraints early

  • Access, parking, stairs and timing
  • Pets, vulnerable occupants and other people present
  • Known hazards, fragile surfaces and valuable property
  • Who supplies parts, materials, tools or transport

Keep changes visible

If the real task changes, stop and agree the new scope, price and timing before extra work begins. Do not pressure a provider to perform regulated, prohibited or unsafe work.
